The following questions are some of the more common questions our flight instructors are asked. We hope that this information is beneficial to you. Is any previous experience required to fly?

The only prerequisite for learning to fly is that you must be able to read, speak, and understand the English language, be at least 16 years old and be able to pass an FAA Third class physical exam.

How long does flight training take?

The time it takes to learn depends on which certificate you are trying to obtain and how frequently you have lessons.

What will I learn during flight training?

Flight training consists of more than just "driving" the aircraft. You will also be trained in aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, regulations and many other subjects. All through your training there will be an emphasis on safety and how to handle any potential emergencies.

What kind of airplane is used for flight training?

ASI uses Cessna 152, Cessna 172SP and Cessna 172RG aircraft in their training and rental program. The C152 is a two seat aircraft used primarily as a basic trainer. The C172SP is a newer aircraft which has a 180 HP engine and is fuel injected; it can be used for primary training or advanced instrument training including the latest GPS technology. The C172RG is a four seat retractable gear complex aircraft used for advanced training and for cross-country rental. All of the aircraft are available for rental after you have completed your training.

How can I get the best training available?

There is no simple answer to that question. However their are a number of things to evaluate before starting flight training:

  • Look at the training aircraft. Check the condition, availability, scheduling rules and maintenance.
  • Check the training facility for classroom space, appearance, and accessibility
  • Talk to the staff about FAR Part 61 versus FAR Part 141 training and how that will affect you
  • Check the qualifications, experience and availability of instructors
  • Also determine if you will be assigned to an specific instructor or will it be just any instructor "on duty" who will train you.

What can I do with my private pilot certificate?

You can fly almost anywhere and at any time if the weather is at or above legal minimums. You can carry any passengers as long as you are not being paid for your services as a pilot. The Private Pilot Certificate is a very powerful tool for pleasure flying or traveling.

A Private Pilot certificate is the prerequisite for advanced training.
